Hannah Hickman is Associate Professor of Planning Practice in the Faculty of Environment and Technology. She joined UWE as a member of staff in 2017 after a career involving senior leadership roles in both the public and private sectors as a professional town planner.
She is passionate about research and its value in achieving change in policy and practice, ensuring that research has an impact beyond the confines of academic dialogue. Her research is principally focused on the areas of housing, infrastructure planning (both national and local) and professional practice.
Recent examples of her consultancy research include work for the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) on “a smarter approach to infrastructure planning”, work for the Planning Advisory Service on the role of local authorities in bringing forward brownfield land for housing, and research for the West of England Combined Authority on “managing housing design quality post-consent”. This work was the recipient of the RTPI’s 2021 Sir Peter Hall Award for Research Excellence, and was praised by the judges for being highly practice relevant.
