For International Women’s Day this year we’re collaborating with the ShelterBox Book Club, an award-winning subscription service and the biggest charity book club in the country.

Every six weeks their 3,000 members receive books inspired by people and places in the real world – people who have been helped by ShelterBox in an emergency. Members get the chance to vote on the next book, join discussions and exclusive online events like live author Q&As, and all proceeds go towards providing aid to families hit by disaster.

Together, we worked on a shortlist of titles from around the world to celebrate International Women’s Day and we’re delighted to announce that the book we’ll be reading is Three Apples Fell From The Sky by Narina Abgaryan, a Russian bestseller set in Armenia.

About The Book

In the tiny village of Maran nestled high in the Armenian mountains, a place where dreams, curses and miracles are taken very seriously, a close-knit community bickers, gossips and laughs, untouched by the passage of time. A lifelong resident, Anatolia is happily set in her ways. Until, that is, she wakes up one day utterly convinced that she is dying, She lies down on her bed and prepares to meet her maker, but just when she thinks everything is ready, she is interrupted by a surprise visit from a neighbour with an unexpected proposal.

So begins a tale of unforeseen twists and unlikely romance that turn Maran on its head and breathes a new lease of life into a forgotten group of people. This enchanting fable is a heart-warming tale of community, courage, and the irresistible joy of everyday friendship.

Narine Abgaryan is a Russian writer and blogger originally from Armenia. She is the award-winning author of eight novels and four short story collections, and was made the Laureate of the prestigious Yasnaya Polyana Literary Award in 2016.

The book was translated by Lisa Hayden a literary translator who focuses on Russian fiction, lives on the Maine coast, and has a penchant for ‘unusual language’.
